HILLEBRECHT – HIT ME BABY ONE MORE TIME

1/5

“The miracle of Hanover” is still the phrase used today when people talk about Rudolf Hillebrecht - the man who not only rebuilt Hanover as city planning officer, but also directly redesigned it into a presentable, car-friendly city. Above all, the Cityring, on which we have also placed the festival center for theaterformen, has made Hillebrecht famous as an urban planner.

What is talked about less often and, above all, much less readily, is Hillebrecht’s stellar career in the Third Reich, the administration of forced laborers and the Nazi milieus, which were an undeniable part of his professional work and also of his success. Ivana Rohr highlighted this part of the architect and his “miracle with a Nazi background” in a short lecture performance and brought it to the fore, not only in her performance, but also in the subsequent discussion with Dilek Ruf, the then chairwoman of the BDA Hannover, an association that still likes to adorn itself with Hillebrecht, at least in part, and was correspondingly incensed.

Despite the old white men and their “Nestbeschmutzungs” (dirty nest) ranting, the discussion focused on the question of whether architecture can be apolitical, how much responsibility architects and urban planners bear in relation to their lived and built environment and what role this gives them in our society. Both Hillebrecht’s biography and his urban planning visions and their consequences were the starting point for this discussion, which also spanned the arc in the exchange with the audience, to our current challenges and the prospect of having to be measured by our actions and decisions at some point.

And all this against a backdrop that Hillebrecht really couldn’t have dreamed up more beautifully! Oh baby, baby, how was he supposed to know…
